Back Pain and Sciatica

Acute and chronic back pain is one of the most common conditions seen worldwide. It affects all aspects of your life. Your back pain can be caused by a rib dysfunction, joint disorder/condition, muscle strain, or inflammation. Back pain can be affected by your diet and sleep patterns. Most common causes of back pain are disc herniation (bulging disc), stenosis, or degenerative disc disease. Poor posture, weak core strength, and impaired flexibility can all contribute to increase back pain and disc compression.

Sciatica is a condition when your sciatic nerve is irritated causing pain or numbness/tingling from your back through the hips and buttock region down the leg. Typically it is only one side of the body. It is typically caused by a herniated disc in your back or tightness of your gluteal and piriformis muscle causing the nerve irritation. Stretching, decompression, and core strengthening exercises are common ways to treat this condition.

Headaches and TMD

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint aka your jaw. It is a sliding hinge joint that connects your jawbone (mandible) to your skull. TMD means temporomandibular joint disorders. These include injury to the joint, muscles, and ligaments. These can be caused by poor posture, improper bite, trauma, arthritis, stress, or wear and tear. The most common symptom is jaw tenderness, difficulty chewing, earaches, and accompanying headache.

Headaches include pain in any region of the head. The most common type is a tension headache where the pain radiates from the base of the skull up to above the eyes where it feels like a squeezing sensation. This is typically caused due to muscle guarding or tightness in the muscles on the back of your head and neck.
